Self-Storage | 4 Guidelines To Safely Pack Glass Plates For Storage Units

Posted on

If you've decided to move to another country on a work assignment for the short or long term, then you may want to consider hiring a self-storage unit to hold on to your belongings until you return. Glass plates are especially vulnerable to breaking if you're not careful, so follow these guidelines to safely pack them before placing them in self-storage.

Clean Each Plate To Prevent Debris From Scratching The Glass

Sometimes glass plates may contain dust and debris that can potentially scratch them when they are packed inside the self-storage unit. Your first action is to clean the glass plates by washing and drying them before packing. This will remove any potential scratch-causing elements from them.

Wrap Each Plate With Packing Paper Individually

Packing paper is easily available at most stationery stores and is always a better choice than regular newspaper because you don't want the ink from newspaper to permanently stain the glass. Start by wrapping each plate with packing paper individually to prevent glass from rubbing against each other and cracking under pressure. Each sheet should be large enough to accommodate the entire plate. Secure each packed plate with packing tape to prevent the paper from unraveling inside the self-storage unit.

Prepare The Cardboard Box Bottom For Storing The Glass Plates

Once you finish wrapping each glass plate individually, you will need to place the glass plates inside a cardboard box. But you must prepare the cardboard box properly to ensure that the glass doesn't crack inside. Place crushed newspaper or packing paper at the bottom to create a soft base for the plates. The soft base will prevent the plates from coming into contact with the hard ground, giving them enough cushioning to protect them from breaking. Using newspaper for this task is no problem because it doesn't encounter the glass directly.

Place The Glass Plates Inside A Box

Once you finish preparing the bottom of the box, start by stacking up each plate inside by laying them flat on the ground. Place as many plates as the box can accommodate, but take care not to over pack or the box may give way from below and shatter all your plates. Fill any empty spaces with more crushed paper to ensure that the plates don't move while they are being transported to the self-storage unit. Secure the box with packing tape and transport it carefully to keep your plates protected.

Follow these guidelines in your quest to protect your glass plates from damage while they are placed in the self-storage unit.
