How To Stop Your Vacuum Cleaner Bag From Smelling Of Dog!

Posted on

If you own a dog, you may have experienced that awful odour of wet hound when you use your vacuum cleaner.  Even though your carpets show no traces of pet hair, the place still pongs of pooch.  But what can you do?  If you have a vacuum cleaner with a bag, this method works very well.

Here's how to rid your vacuum cleaner of that dreaded doggy odour for good.

What you'll need

  • washing-up liquid
  • warm water
  • cotton wool balls
  • scented oils (lavender or eucalyptus work well)
  • tumble dryer fabric freshener sheets
  • paper towels

How to do it

If you have a vacuum cleaner with a bag, follow these instructions:

  1. First of all, remove and discard the dirty bag.
  2. Next, unscrew the vacuum hose.
  3. Wash out the bag compartment with a mild solution of washing-up liquid and warm water.  Dry thoroughly using paper towels.
  4. Make up a fresh batch of cleaning solution.  Remove the roller brushes from the bottom of the vacuum cleaner, and wash them thoroughly in your cleaning solution.  The brushes should just pop off, or you may have to unscrew them—see the manufacturer's instructions for your make of vacuum cleaner.  Leave the brushes to air dry.  Wash the area underneath the brushes and dry thoroughly with paper towels.
  5. When everything is completely dry, replace the brushes and the hose.
  6. Now take a couple of cotton wool balls and add a few drops of the scented oil of your choice.  If you like a strongly-scented room, just add more oil.  Place the scented cotton balls in the bottom of the vacuum bag compartment.
  7. Finally, fit a new vacuum cleaner bag.

How does it work?

When it's in use, your vacuum cleaner sucks in air and pushes air out as you move it around the house.  The air passes through the vacuum bag chamber, leaving any debris it contains in the bag.  The air is then vented out into your home carrying with it the scent of oil, rather than the smell of stale dog.  If you prefer, you can substitute the cotton balls and oil for fabric conditioner sheets with the scent of your choice.

It's important that you change the vacuum bag after each use to prevent the smell of dog from becoming entrenched in the vacuum cleaner filters and brushes.  Follow this method weekly, changing the cotton balls or fabric freshener sheets each time, to keep your vacuum cleaner smelling fresh and free from dodgy doggy odours.
