Get Years (or Decades) More from Your Table with a Simple Sheet of Glass

Posted on

A glass table is not exactly a rarity, and it's usually just a sheet of glass contained within a wooden, aluminium, or wicker frame. But what about opting for a glass covering for your existing dining room table? It's such a simple, straightforward design choice that it's almost strange that more people haven't chosen to do this in order to make their table last longer. But what exactly are the key benefits of a glass table covering? And will any old piece of glass do?

Made to Measure

The sheet of glass needs to be made to measure, and any window supplier can take care of this for you. A glass table top differs from a traditional piece of glass. It's usually tempered to make it heat resistant. This means you can place hot dishes straight onto it. It will also be stain resistant, allowing you to wipe away any spills.

Pre-Made Table Tops

Many furniture stores will sell pre-made glass table tops. Do not purchase these unless you bought your table from the same store and it's made specifically for your model of table. It needs to fit the table exactly. The window supplier will need to visit your home to take precise measurements of the table.

Protection

The key reason for a glass table top is to protect the wood. You can still enjoy the beauty of the wood without worrying about staining it in any way. The glass can add years, if not decades, to the table's lifespan. The glass table top is made to order, delivered, and then laid into place. You will probably never have to move it again, unless there is a severe spill.

Removing the Glass

In an instance where liquid has been spilt and has run down the edge of the table, there is a small chance that it might seep into the tiny space between the glass and the actual table top. This is the only time when you would need to remove the glass table top. You will obviously need some help to do so. Two or three people (depending on the size of the sheet of glass) would simply lift the glass table top while you wipe underneath. The glass has been strengthened, so it's not as though this is a particularly risky operation. It can only be slightly problematic due to the weight of the glass.

A glass table top is a quick and easy way of extending the life of your table, while minimising the amount of cleaning you'll need to do.
