Natural and Convenient Ways to Rid Yourself of Wasps

Posted on

Being able to eat outside is one of the nicest things about summer, but those plans are often derailed by an invasion of wasps. Not only do they come with a literal sting in the tail, wasps will crawl all over your food and buzz about your face; even worse, killing them releases a pheromone that actually attracts other wasps!

With that in mind, use these three convenient solutions to help rid yourself of wasps using natural household items.

Make a Fake Nest

One thing you need to know about wasps is that they are incredibly territorial, a fact you can fortunately use to your advantage. If you hang up a fake nest in your garden or on your home, then they'll distrust the area and go elsewhere.

All you need to accomplish this is a normal brown paper bag and a length of string. Crumple up the bag to give it the shape of a wasp's nest, then attach the string and hang it somewhere close to your outside entertaining space. Wasps won't be sure if it's a nest, but their natural instincts will prevent them from investigating.

Make a Wasp Trap

If you find that there are plenty of wasps already around, it might be too late to hang up a false nest. Of course, you can still make a trap quickly and easily in order to do away with the wasps that you have.

Start by taking a normal 2 litre plastic bottle. Cut the neck off just below where it starts to taper down, then remove the cap and coat the outside of the neck with jam. Next, invert the top piece back into the bottle so that the mouth is pointing downwards with the jam-coated side facing outwards. Finally, fill the bottle with water until it's about an inch away from the top section. Wasps will go down the funnel to get the jam, but will find it almost impossible to get out.

Make a Natural Wasp Spray

Most commercial sprays use chemicals for killing wasps. They can be effective, but the ingredients may be harmful, especially when being sprayed around food.

Luckily, you can make your own wasp repellent using just water, peppermint oil, and a standard spray bottle. Take one tablespoon of your peppermint oil and add it to four cups of water, then mix the two in the spray bottle. Spraying wasps with the mixture will kill them in seconds, and wasps hate the smell so much that they won't even think of coming back to investigate the dead wasp's pheromone scent.

Wasps can be real pests when summer comes, but you'll be one step ahead of those tiny buzzing beasts when you use these convenient and natural pest control solutions.
