How To Decorate Your Awning

Posted on

If you're bored with your outdoor awning and would like to brighten it up, why not enhance the look by using curtain fabric in a contrasting colour or pattern?  This clever idea allows you to remove the curtain fabric in the wintertime for cleaning and storage, or simply to make the changes when you want to.

This simple project can be completed in just an afternoon and requires minimal needlework skills.  Everything you need can be obtained from a good haberdashery or fabric shop.

Here's how to do it.

  1. Before you start, take your awning down and clean it.  Wash the poles down too so that everything is fresh and clean.
  2. Begin by selecting a suitable curtain to complement or contrast with your awning.  You could either choose a material that can be left outside in all weathers, or opt for something that will just be used during the summer months, then taken down for the winter.
  3. Measure the curtain and cut it to the correct size so that it fits on top of your awning to give the look you want.  You won't need the curtain tape along the top of the curtain, so cut this off too.  You should be left with a square piece of material with raw edges that will provide a central panel on your awning.
  4. Next you'll need to tidy-up any rough edges of the cut fabric.  Press the edges over twice and iron them flat to form a neat hem.  If you're handy with a sewing machine or a needle and thread, you could stitch the hems into place.  If you prefer, secure them using a liquid seam product available from good haberdashery or craft stores.  Follow the manufacturer's directions on the bottle carefully.
  5. Fix strips of Velcro to the reverse of the awning and in the corresponding place at the top of the curtain fabric so that you can take the curtain down when the awning is not in use.
  6. Fix clip-on hooks to the top edge of the awning.  Choose a variety of different crystal beads that blend with both fabrics and hang them on the hooks so that they cascade down over the curtain.  You could also add fringing, tassels and charms for a Middle Eastern vibe.
  7. If you wish, finish off your revamped awning by fixing tie-backs to the awning pole.  This gives you the option to draw the curtain back to one side so as to reveal the contrasting awning fabric beneath.
