Split-System Air Conditioning: Reasons Why They Are Ideal for Australian Conditions

Posted on

If you live anywhere south of Noosa, or anywhere west of the Great Dividing Range, you will know two things: it's very hot in summer, and cold in winter, especially at night. The best way to climate control your house in these conditions is with split-system air conditioning.

So what is split-system air conditioning? Simply put, it is an air conditioning system that is made up of two units:

  • The outside unit, which is the compressor
  • The inside air outlet unit, which is generally called the "wall hung head unit"

The compressor and the wall hung head unit are connected by pipes that carry refrigerant. A split-system air conditioner has the ability to cool or heat a space. This means you no longer need those kerosene or electric heaters in winter—your air conditioner can heat your house as well as cool it.

In order to ensure that both functions can operate effectively, a split-system air conditioner separates the cooling function from the heating function. The cooling mechanism is found in the inside unit, where cooling coils refrigerate the air as it is passed through the coils and out into the room.

By contrast, the heating mechanism is found in the compressor, which is situated outside the house. However, the same principle applies; air is blown by a fan through heating coils before being transported via the pipes to the wall hung head unit, where that warm air is then distributed into the room.

Aside from being able to heat and cool a room or house as the seasons dictate, split-system air conditioners have a number of advantages over traditional window-mounted air conditioners:

  • They save on internal space as the condenser is situated outside the house.
  • They reduce internal noise by having the noisier part of the air conditioner external to the home.
  • They frequently provide more capacity than a window-mounted system as the size of the unit is not dictated by the amount of space you have inside the house.
  • A split-system air conditioner can also be produced at lower cost, meaning it will cost less per capacity than other types of air conditioners.

So whether you are sweltering on a 40 degree-plus day in January or you are shivering through a -5 degree night, you will find that a split-system air conditioner will not let you down. It will save you space, be whisper-quiet, and also gives you a single appliance that you can use to control the climate in your house, all year round.
